Half of The Lemon Twigs dives deep into his mellow, introspective world and gives a glimpse of what's going on in his head. The other half is along for the ride Yo, The Lemon Twigs? Seriously – those guys are something else. It’s like they stepped straight out of a time machine, right? That golden-era album sound, but totally flipped on its head.
Brian D'Addario has been quite the prolific songwriter of late. In case you weren't aware, he is one half of The Lemon Twigs alongside his brother Michael. The New York outfit have won favour with the critics while gathering an acclaim that, at least at first glance, appears a little curious. Well, they've long walked a thin line between acknowledging classic '60s songwriters and being a pastiche of that period.
After 2024's A Dream Is All We Know, the elder D'Addario brother returns with a solo(-ish) record of colour and striking cogency, drawn from songs written over several years. "Country baroque" is his description, a fair fit for the Cali-cowboy title-track and rollicking Nothing On My Mind. Elsewhere, D'Addario roams wide, navigating deftly between earnest pleas for unity (Song Of Everyone; words by former Beach Boys contributor Stephen Kalinick), lush harmonies (Only To Ease My Mind, featuring brother Michael) and Tin Pan Waits-ian stylings (Company).
